ON TRENDS

Trends come and go, and, as the age-old saying goes, what’s old is new again. The same is true with interiors. One thing I always try and encourage my clients to do is pay attention to what is right for them and their family, not what is “trending.”

But with platforms like Pinterest and Instagram inundating us, it’s hard not to get carried away. So, while I always believe in working to create a timeless look, I am excited about what I anticipate we’ll see more of in 2021. Like, color.

Well-proportioned color, that is. While I believe neutral rooms will never go out of style and that there will always a time and a place for them, I know we’re all craving something a bit more substantial, a bit more happy. I’m excited to continue exploring ways to showcase color, pattern and texture in our clients’ homes. It’s what we do best and one of the greatest ways to help make a home feel more personal.

I always like deep blues and am currently particularly interested in a shade by Ressource – FOR15. It is just so eye-catching. We used a color like it during a previous project and I am dying to try this one soon, it would look fantastic in a home library. Two others that I’ve been thinking about are C2 Paint’s “Chelsea” (C2-625) and Farrow & Ball’s “Cinder Rose” (Number 246). They’re both such lovely, romantic shades and would be perfect in either a bedroom or sunroom.

In addition to color, we’ll see more separation of spaces. There are two ways to draw a floorplan, open or more sectioned off. Coming off of last year, our clients appreciate the separation of space. Last year, kids zones and dedicated spaces to mediate at home came to the forefront. This year we’ll help clients find creative ways to create barriers and architectural dividers; I am looking forward to coming up with new ideas. Right now, we’re working with a family on a creative solution to separate the kitchen from the living room in their city apartment.

Our clients are looking to us to help them find ways to elevate our everyday experiences. We are getting more requests for kitchen and bathroom refreshes than ever before. People are more open to the bells and whistles as a way to indulge in daily pampering. Examples include: a shower with steam component, finally installing an at-home sauna and splurging on appliance upgrades in the kitchen. It’s the little things, sometimes.

We typically field the bulk of our new project phone calls in January. This year was no different, and unsurprisingly, everyone wants to be outdoors, in style, come spring. Whether you are a city dweller or have the luxury of a sprawling backyard, there are options.

We’re helping one family with a pool house makeover. They are looking to create a space that feels like a destination, it will be super fun-spirited and separate from the rest of the porch. Total country club vibes, at home! Some of my favorite outdoor spaces have magnificent areas dedicated to entertaining, complete with kitchens. If you are at the point where you can invite over another trusted family or friends, you want to do it right.

If you live in a city or space is limited, there’s something for you, too. I love the idea of a hanging garden on a small porch. If you have a roof deck or terrace, you can consider larger, stylish planters, alongside lounge and dining furniture that is multi-functional. You can’t go wrong with any of these. We’ve worked with clients on lovely outdoor spots across the city, including an herb garden on a large wrap-around porch, a downtown deck with plenty of room to lounge and dining for twelve, and townhouses with backyard space.

We hope you’re feeling as inspired about what’s ahead as we are! If you find yourself in need of a refresh – or total overhaul – the KWI team is ready and excited to help you make it happen, always in style. You know where to find us.
